Motor Insurance
Third-party cover is compulsory by law

Covers your car, two-wheeler, truck or EV against damage and theft, and covers what you owe someone else if you injure them or damage their property. Only the third-party part is legally required — the part that protects your own vehicle is optional, and the part people regret skipping.

What it will not pay for

Read this before you buy.

  • Driving without a valid licence, or with an expired one
  • Driving under the influence — the whole claim is void, not reduced
  • Normal wear, tyre damage without accident, and mechanical breakdown
  • Using a private car commercially, including as a taxi
  • Consequential damage — driving a flooded car and seizing the engine
How a claim works

Motor claims are settled on a surveyor’s report, so the first hour matters more than the paperwork. Photograph everything before the vehicle moves.

  1. 01

    Report before moving the vehicle

    · within 24 hrs

Call the insurer or raise it here. Photograph all four corners, the number plate and the other vehicle. A moved vehicle weakens every later argument.

  2. 02

    Surveyor inspects

    · same day

The insurer appoints a surveyor at the garage or the accident site. Their report sets the amount, not the garage estimate.

  3. 03

    Repair approved

    · 1–2 days

At a network garage the insurer pays directly. Outside the network you pay and claim reimbursement, which takes longer and often settles lower.

  4. 04

    Repair and delivery

    · 3–9 days

You pay only the compulsory deductible and any depreciation, unless you bought zero-dep. Ask for the parts bill; depreciation is applied line by line.

  5. 05

    Your bonus resets

    · at renewal

One claim wipes out the No Claim Bonus you have built. On a small dent it is usually cheaper to pay yourself than to claim.

The common mistake

Buying the cheapest third-party-only cover to be legal. It pays the person you hit and nothing towards your own car, so a ₹2,000 saving becomes a ₹1.8 L repair you fund yourself.
